We had big plans for season 54, the biggest of which was to compete in our first Germany Tour and win the sprint competition. Unfortunately, a miscalculation with race signups meant that Hadley Childers’ top form was not triggered in time, and we had to settle for 3rd place.
Childers still had a solid tour, finishing in the top 3 on 3 stages, we’re sure we’ll be back next year with a stronger team. He also was unable to follow up his Nederlandse Tour success when he attempted to win the race in back-to-back seasons. Dirk-Jan Helwig put up a very strong fight and managed to hold off Childers in the end.
One of our targets for this year was to stay in division 1 for the entirety of the season, which we managed. We also won our first ever division 1 races with wins in Novosibirsk Tourism Trophy and GP Funen. After 13 seasons of competition we now fully feel like an established division 1 team.
But there is still a long way to go. Ingemann Vesterå had an especially poor season, only earning his first points on day 87 after 8 failed attempts in climbing races. Perhaps he’s beginning to show his age, or maybe division 1 is just a little too hard for him. He has a recharged top form which he’s hoping to put to good use early on next season.
The rest of the hill/climbing team too are starting to show their age. Rubert Smidt - a rider who has scored points for us in every single season that we have existed - failed to score anything this season. Donald Minca, too, managed just 40 points before retiring. The non-sprinting side of the team definitely needs refreshing if we’re going to remain a 1st division team.
So the team’s savior, again, was Hadley Childers. Despite not winning any major competitions this year, he managed 2080 points, which put him firmly as OCM’s number 1 rider this season. This, in itself, is a huge achievement even if it wasn’t a target.
Looking to next year we have just one goal, The Germany Tour. Childers will recharge his top form immediately along with the rest of the sprinting team. The other riders will work hard to score as many points as possible to ensure qualification.
A number of young Brazilians are also being trained as we look to go all Brazilian in the future.
